What I am about to tell you now is probably the most important part of the whole game of chess.

1. The King is the most important of all the Chess Pieces, even though he is one of the weakest.

2. You are never allowed to capture your opponent's king and he or she is never allowed to capture yours.

3. You are never allowed to move your king to a square where it is attacked.

4. If your King is attacked, it is "In Check". Your very next move must be to stop the check. There might be three ways of doing this: move the king, capture the attacking piece, or block the attack.

5. If your king is In Check and you cannot find a way of getting him Out of Check, he is said to be Checkmated, and you have lost the game. Checkmate immediately ends the game.
