When we start to play chess, we lose a lot of games simply because we are more careless than our opponent and we let them take our pieces. Chess is like Football: if your team gets a man sent off, then you more likely to lose simply becasue you have got fewer men on your side.

Then we start to take care of our pieces and the games last a lot longer. Our opponents get better as well and we have to use cleverer ideas if we are going to win. This is where Tactics come in.

Tactics are, simply, the creation of more than one threat at a time. Our opponent finds a move which deals with one threat, but cannot deal with another one.

Tactics come in many different types and we are going to deal with them one at a time.
